The Origins of the Rainbow Flag

Ever wondered how the rainbow flag became a symbol for the gay community? This article shares the story of its origins when Milk asked Gilbert Baker to create a symbol for the gay community.

I had not realized that each color on the flag symbolized something which I found very cool.
Pink: sex
Red: life
Orange: healing
Yellow: sun
Green: nature
Turquoise: magic
Blue: serenity
Purple: spirit

Watching the video, I found it really surprising how young Baker seemed. I always manage to forget how recent this history is.

  1. Thank you for sharing the article. I did not know the origin of the rainbow flag and its connection with Harvey Milk. And the meaning the flag is just beautiful and I love its implication of non-violence.

  2. This is awesome! I also did not realize how recently the rainbow flag was created, but in fits perfectly into the history we've learned about the momentum of the gay liberation movement in the 1970s. It makes sense that Milk would want a flag - after all, what a great way to make a statement of how you're proud of your identity as well as increase visibility of the gay community.

  3. Wow! It is really interesting how such a key symbol tied into Harvey Milk, only showing another impact he made about the gay community. It kind of reminds me about how he was encouraging everybody to come out and create more visibility about the gay community - this works hand and hand with his ideas.
