Celebrations in the Castro
After watching The Times of Harvey Milk, I realized how important the Castro is as a place of gathering for LGBTQ+ populations in San Francisco. Here is a video of celebrations in the Castro following the legalization of same-sex marriage, and I couldn't help but draw parallels between this and when Milk was elected supervisor. Definitely hope to revisit the Castro with a renewed understanding of its significance in LGBTQ+ history.

Thanks for sharing this video! I had the same thoughts on the parallels in the Milk movie and on the Gay Pride celebration in the Castro when I visited SF in 2015. In the movie, there was a moment where people released balloons from the roofs and danced on the street that reminded me of the 2015 Gay Pride celebration.
ReplyDeleteOn a darker note, as Becca mentioned in our section after we watched this documentary, this summer we went to the candlelight vigil after the Orlando shooting and marched from the Castro to City Hall. It very much resembled the powerful footage in the documentary of the march after Milk's death. This once again shows the continued importance of the Castro to the LGBTQ+ community and the symbolic and historically-relevant nature of many of the gatherings and efforts today.
