Sagehen Athletics Track Team
I thought this was a fun article about our peers here at the Claremont colleges!
As Gaypril goes on at Pomona, I'm always noticing which voices of Gaypril get projected. We have the rainbow wall and we have the banner outside of our campus center. It is true that gay men have been historically excluded from sports, and that there is rampant homophobia and hyper masculinity in athletics. But I would also point out that this photo promotes a very masculine, traditionally attractive image of the gay community at the Claremont Colleges. It reminds me a bit of Obama's Don't Ask Don't Tell repeal speech, where he highlights a hyper-masculine gay soldier as the pinnacle of American pride. I don't mean for this to be an attack on the students, because I know they're wonderful people. I just think we should question which gay voices are being heralded during Gaypril.
Love this!
