NYT Article about gender expression
Here's an interesting op-ed about gender expression - would love to hear everyone's thoughts!
Anna! I read this too and found myself grappling with this line: "She is not gender nonconforming. She is gender role nonconforming." How does gender nonconforming identity actually reify gender roles and gender presentation? Does the gender nonconforming identity limit people from presenting different than their gender and still identify as that gender? Moreover, does it make it harder to be a tomboy? Maybe!
Wow! This article raises so many questions. Personally, I thought it was a bit off the mark about transness. It's like what Professor Williams talked about during the Ath panel: people question the authenticity of trans folk all the time. Here's an interesting response article written by a queer parent. They also disagree with the author based on what you said, Becca, and look at her point by point. It is published on Medium instead of New York Times though, which raises another relevant question about voices and platforms. https://medium.com/@chase.strangio/an-open-letter-to-those-praising-the-new-york-times-tomboy-piece-755e655ce31c
