Op-ed: Hannah Is a Girl. Doctors Finally Treat Her Like One.

Today's New York Times carried this opinion piece about new medical approaches to treatment for transgender youth.

  1. This is really interesting. It's nice to see the medical field moving in a positive direction. Reminds me of how often we've seen science/medicine used to silence or discriminate against LGBT individuals in our class readings.

  2. Wow -- super interesting to learn about new medical approaches, and as Alex said, really encouraging that more and more research is being done as to what the best approaches are. But crazy to think that just 15 years ago, a professor of Clinical Psychology at Columbia was proposing a treatment that included "keeping the child away from typically feminine activities like gymnastics, scheduling more play dates with boys and encouraging 'letting go' of the boy by the mother."

I was particularly happy to see the results of the study that found transgender youth who had been allowed to socially transition experienced essentially no greater anxiety and depression than their non-transgender peers -- great evidence to show that the direction the field is going in now is the right one, and powerful to think of the difference that is making in the lives of these children and families.
